Benign Pigmented Lesions Procedure InformationPrior to treating any pigmented areas, the patient is evaluated to be sure the lesions are benign. If needed, a biopsy of the area may be recommended. Generation of the intense pulsed light safely breaks up the melanin (the dark pigmentation in the skin), so that the pigmented lesions fade and slowly disappear. Treatment is applied by placing a cold gel and then the hand-held treatment unit is held near the skin and treatment proceeds. Several cut-off light filters and energy levels are used depending on the problem being treated. When using the Galaxy different a mix of different energies in the IPL and radiofrequency are used in order to optimize the treatment. Treatments range from one to four sessions of about 15 minutes each. If benign they can be removed quickly and easily with the non-invasive technology of Intense Pulsed Light, using the newest Luminis-One, or the very efficient Vasculight. This has been a breakthrough for eliminating benign pigmented lesions safely and effectively without cutting or using certain lasers that leave tell-tale white spots. The Galaxy SR using IPL and radiofrequency is also used for certain type of pigmented lesions. Depending on the area and depth several treatments may be needed and in most cases an improvement is seen. Microdermabrasion using a diamond tip and topical treatments with chemical peels are also sometimes added to the treatment regimen. |
